ELO at the Edinburgh Playhouse
ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA & ELO PART II FORMER MEMBERS
Friday 21st March 2008 - 7.30pm

The Ever-changing Line-up Orchestra. Not satisfied with the huge commercial success of the original ELO in the seventies, drummer Bev Bevan formed ELO Part 2 in 1990 with Neil Lockwood replacing Jeff Lynne on vocals. Meanwhile Jeff busied himself being a producer and filing a lawsuit against the group for carrying on without him - hence the 'Part 2' tag. Although some would argue, ELO without Lynne is like The Beatles without McCartney, many will be overjoyed that the group has reformed and their infectious brand of orchestral rock is back on the road. SING-A-LONG-A SOUND OF MUSIC
Saturday 22nd March 2008 - 7pm

Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music is your chance to test your vocal range with several hundred other assorted nuns, Von Trapp family members and Julie Andrews look-a-likes. The evening begins with a live show in which your host will lead you through a vocal warm-up, judge the fancy dress competition and award the prizes. Costumes are not compulsory but they are highly recommended and you will be amazed at the inventiveness on display. The host will then show you how to use your free goody bag throughout the film and suggest some appropriate heckles and accompanying actions, such as hissing the countess, barking at Rolf and, of course, cheering for Julie. Then, you sit back and watch the original 1965 movie in glorious Technicolor ™ with the lyrics for all the songs on the screen, so you won’t miss a chance to sing your hearts out. The audience takes over as the star of the show from this point and almost anything can happen – the first rule of Sing-a-long-a is there are no rules. It’s not compulsory to dress up but many people do and it really adds to the fun. Dip into the wardrobe of your imagination and surprise us with your creation. There is a 30-minute pre-film show during which the host leads you through a vocal warm-up, prepares you for special moments throughout the film and judges the fancy dress competition. Everyone receives a free goody bag with special props for the “magic moments” that make the evening go with a bang. With pre-show, Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music show lasts about 3 hours 50 mins, with an interval. (back to top)

The Beach Boys at the Edinburgh Playhouse
THE BEACH BOYS

Tuesday 8th April 2008 - 7.30pm

You can capsulize most pop music acts by reciting how many hits they’ve had and how many millions of albums they’ve sold. But these conventional measurements fall short when you’re assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. To be sure, this band has birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that it changed the musical landscape so profoundly that every pop act since has been in its debt. Happily for us all, The Beach Boys continue to create and perform with the same bold imagination and style that marked their explosive debut 40 years ago. In 2006, their Capitol Records release, Sounds of Summer (RIAA certified double platinum with over two million in sales), marks a resurgence in Beach Boys interest that has again rocked the world. In addition to founding Beach Boy Mike Love (lead vocals) and Beach Boy-vet Bruce Johnston (vocals/keyboards)--Christian Love (guitar/vocals), Randell Kirsch (guitar/vocals), Chris Farmer (bass/vocals), Tim Bonhomme (keyboards/vocals), John Cowsill of The Cowsills (percussion /vocals) and Scott Totten (guitar/vocals) round out the band.
